Recitors

I'm so excited - a fellow blogger has provided me with a possible link to finding a recording of the recitation of a former Imam at Regents Park Masjid- Imam Atiyyah. An Egyptian brother, his recitation was slow, deep and with the help of acoustics of the masjid, absolutely beautiful.

I used to always prefer the Saudi Imams over all other recitors a few years back, but now i find myself liking the Egyptians more and more. Perhaps part of that is down to my short stay in Cairo. In fact, what i miss alot from my time there was the long prayers. When you went to the masjid, you didn't pray a quick 5 minute salah. We used to have Fajr last around 15-20 minutes some times.

A friend of mine said to me once that you tend to associate different passages of the Qur'an with different recitors, and with Imam Atiyyah it would be the two last pages of Surah al-Furqan that i'll forever associate with him.

a_passer_by: i have the impression that it'll be a tape recording so i'll ask the brother if he'll allow me to digitise it and put it up. Actually, there are quite a few Imams in London whose recitations are great. One other whose i would like to capture is the Imam at the Moroccan masjid in Ladbroke Grove. He is worth travelling for - especially in Ramadan.

Q8i: you can do all that eh? Which mosque are you the imam of? :)

Sr. Hibba: perhaps you're thinking of Khalid al-Qahtani? He has a soft recitation like Sa'd al-Ghamidi's. Both of them are nice recitors masha'Allah.

Arshad: I used to visit that forum until a little while ago. I find that forums are alot different to how they were years ago. Do you remember how great our forum used to be in its first incarnation?

My favourite recitors are:

- Imam Husry (for prefecting your tajweed)

- Imam Ajmee (for a truly beautiful/touching recitation)

and my most favourite one has to be Imam Usama Khayyat of Makkah.

Dear (anonymous) zawjat kashif :)

Imam Husry is nice - but after a while you just realise he recites toooooo slowly. Imam Ajmi is nice; he really puts his heart into the recitation.
