In a hadith reported in Sahih Muslim the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam said "The last Hour will not take place … until the lands of the Arabs are once again pasture lands and (filled with) rivers."
The word that draws my attention to this hadith is "again" because it implies that there was a time in the past when the Arab lands were lands of greenery, lush and vegetation and teeming with the ecology that comes with such an enviromnent.
Now what is the one product that the Arab lands export to the rest of the world in enormous quantities? Crude oil.
According to the biogenics theory crude oil is "the product of compression and heating of ancient vegetation over geological time scales. According to this theory, it is formed from the decayed remains of prehistoric marine animals and terrestrial plants."
So could it be said that the discovery of oil is another sign of the Prophethood of Muhammad sallallahu alaihi wa sallam?

Following my post about immigrants some time ago i came across this article in today's Guardian. Quote: "In an interview with the Sunday Telegraph, she said that many were angry because their children could no longer get homes in the area following a large influx of immigrants and asylum seekers."

As-Salaamu 'alaikum,
Your interpretation seems rather far-fetched to me - there is a big difference between the land becoming pasture again and the remains of past pastures being pumped out of the ground and burned, raising a lot of money for a lot of not very nice people. Shaikh Ahmed Ali said something similar about a hadeeth regarding a mountain of gold in the Euphrates (in Iraq): that this was sometimes erroneously equated with oil, when it in fact means exactly what it says. Allah knows best.
Everytime I go to Makkah, I would think of this statement: that all the desert we see will one day be lush vegetation. They have planted trees on the Jeddah-Makkah highway, but they don't seem to be growing too well. There are some patches of greenery, which is very noticeable when the land has received heavy rains.
wa alaikum us-salaam
Yusuf, i think the fact that the oil is making money for a not-so-nice government is independent of this prophecy. My comment is only pure speculation, but i don't think its too far-fetched ... yet.
Ahmed Ali's interpretation though DOES seem far-fetched.
